New Business and Enterprise (Women at risk, Ethiopia)

A main part of the reason why Women at Risk is so successful is due to the fact that they give vulnerable women new opportunities.  Leaving the sex work industry requires that women step into a new life, and learning new employment skills is an important part of that.

An important part of the programme is that of passing on business skills with a view to supporting women set up their own businesses or gain employment relevant to the local market. There have been many success stories, especially within the catering or clothing industries.

Cred seed-funded 'Café Chocolata', a café delicatessen aimed at Addis Ababa’s embassy and ex-pat communities. After experiencing a number of challenges, it is now a successful enterprise, and has been a valuable training ground for a number of women. Cred continues to support their professional development by sending over an experienced chocolatier every couple of years so as to provide frequent input and 'upskilling'.

We continue to seek to raise money for Women At Risk so that they can continue to provide vulnerable women with a new life. We believe that their model of therapeutic intervention coupled with hard-nosed business training provides a good model of long-term transformation.
