Campaign
Fair Jewellery Action
Building on our strong history of campaigning for ethical standards in mining and jewellery production, in 2010 CRED is partnering with fair trade jewellers Greg Valerio and Marc Choyt to launch the Future of Jewellery project.
Thanks to the tireless work of organisations such as as the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), Fairtrade Gold, the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM), No Dirty Gold, CAFOD’s Unearth Justice Campaign and others, public perception is now turning towards the issues of ethics in the jewellery trade. With Fairtrade Gold arriving on the scene later this year, pressure is mounting on manufacturers and retailers to address the ethics of their business.
Pioneered by independent Fairtrade campaigner and original CRED founder Greg Valerio the Future of Jewellery project is aimed at engaging the UK & Irish jewellery industry on social, environmental and livelihoods issues through relevant educational materials that will inspire, facilitate and empower jewellers to become more ethical and fair trade in their business practice.
The project goals are to:
- Raise awareness of the impacts of mining and supply chain issues amongst UK jewellers, leading to tangible changes in ethical business practice.
- Enable jewellers to make tangible changes to their business practice to reflect ethical concerns.
- Enable key UK jewellery trade associations to better inform their members of ethical practices
- and to equip undergraduate design students with knowledge and practice in ethical jewellery
The production of this six-part course of materials is the focus of the campaign for the next year.
The Future of Jewellery Project is just part of our ongoing campaigning for justice and change within the jewellery sector. For more information on the ongoing campaign for ethical jewellery production, see:
